The picture to the left is a disk
drive sent to us from a customer and is an example of how not
to package a hard disk drive when you send it in for data
recovery. This is a scenario that happens all to often.

A picture is
worth a thousand words. |

The picture to the right is the
same disk drive with the cover removed during the evaluation
process. Note the dots on the media. The result of poor
packaging caused the head to bounce across the media and damage
it further. This only deceases the chances of a successful data
recovery. |

Better Methods
of packing Hard Disk Drives. |
 |
As you can tell from this photo
the best way to pack a hard drive is to use foam rubber. This
photo is courtesy of Seagate and this is what they recommend.
Packing your drive is simple...if you kept the original box and
packing materials. However, if your drive came in an anti-static
bag only, or was part of a desktop system, packing is not so
simple. |
|
If you don't have
foam rubber and cannot get it then the next best choice would be
bubble wrap. The important thing to remember (however you pack
your drive) is to make sure the drive is packaged in such a way
that it cannot move around in the box. Remember that peanuts
settle in transit and can cause problems. Also make sure to put
the drive in a static bag and don't forget to put the RMA# on
the outside of the box.
